The Pastor’s Blog – SOARING

The other day we were at the Oceanside and the seagulls mesmerized us as they floated on the airstreams. It was an incredibly windy day yet effortlessly they hovered above the water, without hardly moving a muscle. When they did flap their wings, it was obvious that flying suddenly was more difficult in that wind. So most of the time they simply road on the wind, happily calling out to each other, dipping down for the occasional snack that surfaced on the water.

Though seagulls do not soar like the eagles, I could not help but think of the words of Isaiah 40:31:

Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (NIV)

These birds cannot control the winds, but they can do what they were created to do – spread their wings and soar. With all the challenges and adverse winds that blow through our lives, we can choose to flap our wings and fight what is happening – usually with no success – or we can trust in the Lord, spread our wings and let Him carry us through the storm. Resting in Jesus, trusting him moment by moment, allows us to soar peacefully even in the midst of the storms. True, there are things we can, and must do, but certainly things go better when we learn to trust in the Lord.
