The Pastor’s Blog – SECURE

This week I sat in my office at home listening to the sound of the rain on the roof and windows. Now I know many people get depressed when it rains or there are clouds in the sky, but I have to say I love the sound of the falling rain on the roof. It takes me back to some of my best boyhood memories. Believe it or not I am taken back to family camping trips, some of which were right here on Vancouver Island.

When I was a boy, we had the old canvas tents, heavy and smelly. But when it rained they kept you dry. And it seemed it rained a lot when we were on holidays, especially when we were on Vancouver Island. I remember being huddled up in the tent, unable to do anything outside because the rain was coming down too hard.

And so in the confines of that eight by eight foot tent we would sit on our sleeping bags and listen while my mother read us stories. Missionary reading books, classics like Robinson Crusoe, and of course, Bible stories. As we sat all cuddles together, isolated by the rain from the beaches, trails, amusement parks we had a sense of security and peace. We were safe with our parents, and more times than not we would drift in and out of sleep as mother read the books.

The sound of rain still takes me back to those very happy times. I was sheltered in a very safe place. Let the storms howl around us, it did not matter. We were okay.

And as I read Psalm 91:1 I am taken back to those happy moments in the tent with my family. This time I am under the protection of the Heavenly Father. So let the storms howl about me, I am at peace. I am safe. It is a good place…

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Psalm 91:1
