The Pastor’s Blog – HACKED!

I can’t believe it happened to us! I was totally caught off guard!
It started with a quiet evening of watching television on our subscription service. We got half way through the story when I had to run off to a meeting. The beauty of these subscription services is that you can continue watching right where you left off whenever it suits you.

After my meeting we returned to our comfy couch to finish our program, only to have this message splashed across our screen: Unavailable. Too many viewers are using this account. Try again later or upgrade your subscription.

Was this a marketing ploy? What other device? I turned my phone on to check if it was streaming this service. Nope. I checked my computer. Nope. I reset my television and my signal caster, all to no avail. I was starting to think I was in serious trouble. Someone had hacked my account. How did they get in? Did they also get into my computer? What were they doing with my info?

I opened my computer and signed into my account for this streaming service. I looked at the devices signed in. Yes, there was my television, and another television in Alberta! How dare they! Who were they? How did they get in?

Quickly I signed out all devices and changed my password. There was no way this hack was getting more info from me. I thought I was so clever until the next evening when I got a phone call from my daughter. “Say, she said, “What is the password to your streaming service? It seems to have changed!”

It was my kids using my account! I was not hacked. There was no thief. They had a big laugh over this, but I was not laughing quite so much. How did I get so skeptical and suspicious? Is it my age? The environment COVID has produced? Or is it deeper? Is this the residual effects of our fallen nature? I am not sure. What I do know is that I do not want to be assuming the worst, suspicious and paranoid. “Help me, Lord, to think on “whatever is true, … honorable, … just, … pure, … lovely, … commendable, and if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Amen. (from Philippians 4:8)
