The Pastor’s Blog – SUNSET
I love watching the sunset.
It appears I am not the only one, for in the shadows of this picture, taken at Neck Point Park, there are many others enjoying the tranquility of the twilight. God often graces the evening skies with beautiful colors, and a sense of peacefulness settles over the land. Sunset means there is no more time to pick up new projects as the day is almost done. Instead, it is time to reflect on what has been accomplished and give thanks for the day.
Maybe this is why we sometimes say that someone who is well along in years is in the sunset stage of life. Those well advanced in years, sometimes facing health and mental challenges, know that they cannot take on any more big projects. Instead, they take time to reflect on their lives, what has been accomplished and what has been left undone.
May we be able to say with the Apostle Paul when we are in the sunset years of life, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing.…” (2 Timothy 4:7-8, Berean Study Bible)
It is clear the Apostle is thinking about the spiritual race, our relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. As time winds down, both for us as individuals and for life on this planet as we know it, we come to the sunset years. Yes, some day Jesus will return and this journey of time and space will come to an end.
Many have slipped into eternity at the end of their day already, and we look forward to being reunited with those who chose Jesus in this life so they would be ready of the next. And here we are, facing another new day, knowing that one day soon Jesus will return and our day will also come to an end. With all the turmoil and troubles on our earth today, it is not hard to believe sunset will arrive soon. Jesus will draw the curtain on time and He will call His children home.
The sun is setting … are we ready?
