The Pastor’s Blog – MARKERS

The climb was steep and the trail was challenging, but the little red markers helped us stay on the right path. My son and I were climbing Mt. Morrow in Jasper National Park, and though it was not a huge climb, it was easy to get off the main trail and follow a game trail or a trail leading somewhere other than to the summit. In fact, before we found the correct markers, I journeyed down a cycling trail for about a kilometer before I realized I was on the wrong trail.

Throughout life, God has graciously given us markers to help us keep on the right trail. First, there is the Bible, God’s written word to us. As Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (KJV) Of course, this marker does us no good if we do not look for it (i.e. read the Bible). It is also does not help us if we do not heed the direction it points us in.

Another marker is the gathering together for worship with other believers. As we gather and open our hearts and minds to God through worship, God instructs us and directs us in the way we should go. As Hebrews 12:25 says, “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” (NLT)

Most important, Jesus promises not just a marker along the way, but a guide. This guide is the Holy Spirit. As Jesus said, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13 NIV). As the trail gets harder and harder to follow it is most helpful when you can simply keep your eye on someone who knows the way and know he will take you where you should go.

Follow the markers Jesus provides for his followers and you will be safe. Go your own way… and you are lost.
