The Pastor’s Blog – CASTLES IN THE SAND

It will never cease to amaze me what people can do with a pile of sand, some buckets and shaping tools. From cartoon characters to castles, from animals to famous people, almost anything can be, and has been, sculpted in sand at the Parksville sand sculpting competitions. Until COVID descended on our communities, this was an annual event for my family, to go check out the sculptures. Hopefully this will return again this summer.

As I look back through the pictures we have taken through the years I am struck by a thought: these beautiful sculptures are no more. In fact, within a few weeks of these masterpieces being created they were no more. They were knocked down and the sand smoothed to the point that no one could ever guess there was a castle, or a fairy, or a bear once sitting here.

How many lives resemble those sand sculptures? People are running around, busy with this and that, building portfolios and homes, reputations and notoriety, forgetting that within a short time all that will all come crashing down and nothing will remain. Why? Because they will have passed from this earth. I do not mean to be morbid, but the reality is, none of us lives on this earth forever. We all have an expiration date, determined by God Himself. Then, we must be ready to give an account of our lives. The most important question will be, “What have you done with Jesus?” Did we commit our lives to following Him, allowing Him to forgive us, cleanse us and fill us with His Spirit? Or did we ignore him, or dabble a little in religion, or try to tell Him how He should do His business?

Jesus told a parable about two builders. One built his life on the rock, which was able to withstand the storms of life. That rock represented faith in Jesus. The other built his life on the sand, the easy way to build, with no thought about the future. When the storms came, his home collapsed and washed away (Matthew 7:24-27). The conclusion was, a wise man builds his house on faith, and the foolish man does not. What is your life built on: faith in Jesus or simply living for yourself and seeking after the things of this world? Be wise: choose Jesus!
