The Pastor’s Blog – THE BRIDGE

Have you seen the suspension bridge at Elk Falls, just out of Campbell River? The view of the falls from the bridge is spectacular! Watching the water cascade 25 meters (82 feet) down into the deep pool at its base is mesmerizing. God has truly created some beautiful scenery for us to enjoy!

The boy in me was torn between the beauty of the falls and playing on the bridge. Here was a suspension bridge that could be bounced and swayed. Despite the complaints and scolding of my wife, I could not help but have a little fun!

This was a very sturdy bridge. Despite my best efforts, I could barely make it move. It provided a very safe means to cross the canyon, and move from one side to the other. It was designed for safety (no doubt the park was thinking about liability if someone got hurt when they built it).

I know of a safer bridge. It is so sturdy that after 2000 years not one person has ever been lost or hurt who trusted in the bridge. It is the only way to cross from the way of the world to the way of God. It is the only way to eternal life in heaven. That bridge is Jesus. In 1 Timothy 2:5 it says, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

This tells us that the way for people to reach God is through Jesus (“I am the Way,” Jesus says in John 14:6). In Hebrews 4:14-16 we read how Jesus is the great High Priest who brings us to God. Did you know the word “priest” in Latin is pontifex, which literally means “bridge builder?” Jesus built the bridge with his own life, dying and rising from the dead to save us from the sin that separated us from God. Jesus is the bridge. This bridge is unshakable, indestructible, eternal, and therefore it certainly is one I will trust. How about you?
