The Pastor’s Blog – END OF THE JOURNEY

This creek has reached the end of its journey. As it empties into the ocean, it has arrived at its destination. It started somewhere up in the hills as a trickle of water, and as it made its way down towards the ocean, other streams converged to make this creek. Now that the creek has met the ocean it has no place else to go.

This reminded me of the journey we call life. When our journey starts, we are like the small stream, just a baby. Time passes and we add new experiences, new joys and sorrows to our lives, and our personality is enlarged. By the time our life’s journey is completed, whether we are 29 years old or 99 years old, we are a roaring creek of experiences. God has brought us through good times and tough times, joys and sorrows, but now the journey is completed.

Some have wanted to tell us we flow into the big ocean of life and disappear. Our personality is consumed by some large cosmic force. We are like the creek which no longer exists as it flows into the ocean. Death is the end of us and our spirit disappears into the “god spirit” of the universe.

The Christian story is quite different. We are told that death is not the end of the journey, but in many ways just the beginning. The Apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians about the resurrection that takes place after death:

42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

We are given a new body for a new life, a life that continues forever with Jesus. We continue to live, the same persons we were in this life, except we now have a new body. This body is designed for the next stage of our journey: eternity! I may not fully understand it – science certainly cannot explain it – but I know it is true. How do I know? Because of Easter! Jesus rose from the dead and he appeared to the disciples with a new resurrection body. He was still Jesus, but this body was not limited to the rules and laws of nature.

I am so glad death is not the end of the journey. I am glad that as one who has put his faith in Jesus for salvation I look forward to a wonderful future. Thank you, Jesus, for the promise of resurrection! Thank you for the demonstration of resurrection power. Thank you for hope!

Yes! We are the First Resurrected over which the second death holds no power. And to think we will be like Christ, able to do remarkable things and still be ‘us’, but without any sin whatsoever. Hurrah!
