The Pastor’s Blog – WHERE DOES YOUR HELP COME FROM?

As I look out the window of my patio, I get a glimpse of Mt. Benson. This beautiful hill, for it is only 490 meters high, watches over our city, adding beauty and a sense of permanence to our city. It stands as a sentinel that dares anyone to try to touch our city (yes, I have a vivid imagination).

In Psalm 121 David looks up to the hills that surround Jerusalem and asks, “Where does my help come from?” Is it from the hills? Or is it from the deities that the Canaanites worshipped on those hills? Is it from the sentinels posted there by the king to watch over the city? The answer is, “None of these. My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth!”

Faced with all kinds of challenges and trials, we need to know where we will turn to for help. I pray you have family, and good friends, including brothers and sisters from a church family, to turn to in time of need. However, David reminds us that we can look higher still, to the God who created those mighty hills, as the source of help in our lives. The hills are unmoving, stable and strong, but God is even greater. When the winds blow, Mount Benson does not move. When the winds of adversity blow in our lives, God will not be moved. Hold tight to Him, and you will survive the storm.

Today I echo the question of the Psalmist, “Where does my help come from?” My answer is simple: Jesus. “He will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.” (v.7)

Psalm 121

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
